I want to start a journal
Begin with a notebook you already own. Our beginner guide walks through choosing paper, arranging a first page and leaving room for your own words. You can keep the page simple and add more later.

I want a little paper project
Make a folded pocket for a tag or small note. Start with paper, a ruler, scissors and glue, then follow the construction diagram. Use a scrap you like; the pocket does not need to match the rest of your journal.

An easy first project
Keep one small memory
A memory page can begin with one ordinary detail: a walk, a meal, a note from someone or a color you noticed. Choose a keepsake that lies flat, or write down the memory if you do not have anything to save.
- Choose one photo, clean paper scrap or small keepsake.
- Add a writing card, or cut a rectangle from plain paper.
- Write what happened, where you were and one detail you want to remember.
Botanical Notes is free for personal use. No email signup needed.
A few things you might be wondering
Do I need a printer?
No. A notebook, scrap paper and a pen are enough for a first journal page. Printables are an optional extra. If you do print, choose the PDF that matches your paper and follow the pack’s printing instructions.
Do I need to buy supplies?
Start with what you have. Scissors and glue help with paper projects, but you can begin by writing or arranging loose pieces. Keep bulky decorations for later, when you know how you like to use your journal.
What if my page feels unfinished?
Leave a little space and come back to it. A date and two sentences can be enough. For another starting point, browse our nine beginner journal page ideas and choose one arrangement to try.
Which printable should I try first?
Choose Botanical Notes if you want writing cards and tags, or the pocket templates if you want to fold and glue. Open the project guide before printing. Start with just the page you need, choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper, and check the print scale before cutting.
Are the downloads free?
The packs in our Free Printables Library are free for personal use, with no email signup needed. They are PDF files you print yourself. You can explore the previews and instructions before choosing a file. Read each project’s use notes if you plan to share a finished piece.
Where should I go next?
